It is no coincidence that the Ruhr metropolis was European Capital of Culture in 2010, with major cultural events such as the Ruhr Triennale and the Ruhr Piano Festival being recognised beyond its borders. Sport also plays a major role in the Ruhr region: weekend after weekend, football captivates hundreds of thousands of people here and the Ruhr region is practically the heart of football in Germany with its many local rivalries and historic derbies.
